The Bees and the Hive

Grade: 1st-3rd

2024

Lesson Summary:

Students will be collaborating to create a class hive. Each student is responsible to make, at least, 2 hexagons, made from paper, bubble wrap, and acrylic paint, and 1 collaged paper bee. Students will be collaboratively analyzing what it takes to be a part of the hive, a community, and how working together sustains a community. They will create their individual art works first and then be tasked with adding their work to a larger art work. Demonstrating to the students the importance of their contribution but also the effects of a classroom working together to create a piece of art.

Development Stage:

Schematic stage (7-9), at this developmental stage students are making connections between an image and an idea, assigning meaning to symbols, and they use schemas and stereotypes. During this stage students will use exaggeration and distortion when drawing the human figure. They will also repeat a schema for a person.

Essential Questions:

  1. What is collaborative art?

  2. How can I collaborate with my classmates to create artwork?

  3. What is a beehive?

  4. How might our classroom function similar to a beehive?

Specific objectives:

Students will……..

  • Collaborate with their classmates to make a class beehive.

  • Demonstrate their ability to use collage and painting materials properly.

  • Analyze what it takes to sustain a hive and their role within the hive.

Materials:

Bubble wrap, acrylic paint, black paper, white paper, tissue paper, yellow construction paper, magazines.

Beehive= a structure built by bees where the colony lives.

Jersey Design

Grades: 4th-5th

2024

Lesson Summary:

Students will choose an animal and color to be their mascot, finding an animal and color that they find best represents them. They will then practice drawing their mascot on a practice sheet of paper. Students will then transition into a jersey design. There will be several different jersey options; football, soccer, volleyball, cheer, basketball, tennis, etc. that are printed out front and back for students to reference. Students will include their mascot, name, number, and color scheme that they have designed on their jersey.

Development Stage:

Dawning realism stage (9-12), at this stage students have a desire to form lifelike expressions, they have an awareness of what they perceive, and become self-conscious of their drawings. When drawing the human figure there is less exaggeration or distortion of the body.

During the age of reasoning (12-14), students are critically aware of their own shortcomings, they have an ability to focus on select parts of an environment, and details such as wrinkles in clothing become prevalent. Students in this stage also can project a non-literal, personal meaning into objects or events. In terms of spatial representation students have a greater awareness of environment, depth, and perspective and they can also capture action within a picture plane. With the human figure students are able to capture correct proportions, have an awareness of joints and bodily actions, and cartooning is popular.

Essential Questions:

  1. What are the qualities that make a jersey?

  2. What elements of design should you consider?

  3. What is a color scheme?
